Next Club Meeting: • Sunday, August 9th-ride, meeting and picnic at Demon Run ********** NYTRO Southern Tier Meeting Minutes for August 9, 2009 30 members attended!!! Night Ride It was a blast! A fabulous Chicken BBQ dinner served was by Walt, Jean and Vicky at Lake Demmon Recreation. Then we broke up into two groups and set out to ride. Just some light rain fell for the first hour and a half or so...then the skies opened up! And on top of that, someone in the first group ran over a skunk—phew what a smell! We hope to get another night ride planned before the end of the riding season— stay tuned! Town of Howard Parade We had 14 riders participate in the parade. Dave and Vicky put together a neat “float.” They mounted their new Demon Run ATV Trails sign on the back of the hay wagon, then strapped an ATV to it and had Vicky and her grandson seated on it! They led the way for us and it was great publicity for us and the trails. Lots of nice comments! Insurance Update We have switched insurance companies to National Motorsports/ Rider Network as our previous agency came in at almost double the price! We now have better coverage and added medical coverage. We are only charged by membership, not trail miles and landowners. And one event’s coverage is included for each chapter. Reciprocal Riding Agreement in the Works We are talking with the All County ATV Club about setting up a reciprocal riding agreement between our clubs, with a $5 co-pay to cover insurance costs. They have organized rides every- other weekend. The next one is scheduled for August 16th. Please let Pam know if you are interested so that she can make arrangements for you to attend. Their trails are mostly 4-wheel drive, so be prepared! Trails have been a battle lately. Riders looking for woodland trails and finding none in the area except for those in Southern Jefferson have resulted in some heavy and abused riding. Without equipment it is impossible to keep up with the necessary drainage and repair. Signs are up and have heard a lot of positive feed back on them. We will be re-evaluating the trails this fall and depending on the financial status and equipment we will determine in which direction we can expand. We hope to find enough members to step up to the task of putting on a fund raiser and start building up the funds it takes to maintain a trail let alone start to raise funds for equipment purchases. We will see how things are going and try again for a grant. Speaking of grants, Lisa from Yamaha emailed me back and let us know she was told that if our county wished to purchase a user Insurance policy to cover heavy equipment operation, then we could possibly use Lewis County’s Track Hoe which was funded based on regional use. Currently it is cheaper and easier just to rent some real equipment that is more up to the task that we need than screw with the political BS that we keep on hearing. Without any woodland trails open for riders in Lewis County, we will encourage those 2000 disappointed riders to send some of that money our way so we can continue to provide them what they really are looking for. Pipe dream I know, but you gotta dream. Season’s wrapping up and we still feel we have made a gain so even with all the set backs, we have made a positive impact for the riders and the club. Next year we are going to try some new things and see if anything can be improved with the lack of support from the riders and the dealers. Everyone is busy, so those that can spend time with or want to help the club need to be supported by those that don’t wish to or can’t. A few extra dollars can be a big help so will be on the Topic for 2010. So I wrap this up for another month as we get ready for a wet week. Until we meet on the Trails Ride Safe. Dave (585) 334-0122 or dwells@rochester.rr.com Olympia Air Throttle Gloves By David Wells Olympia Sports Company has earned a reputation for high-quality, reasonably priced powersports gloves. They have been around for over sixty years and are still headquartered right here in New York State, making them the home team for us. This year Olympia has introduced their new model 790 Air Throttle sport glove. Although not promoted specifically as an ATV model, I can say from personal experience that they work very well for that application. The outer shell of the Air Throttle is woven nylon mesh with a washable synthetic leather palm, pre-curved fingers, reflective piping, and hookand- loop closure on the wrist. Nothing revolutionary there. But inside is a protection package that isn’t found on most quad riding gloves. This two- stage protection package starts with a concealed knuckle guard that protects against painful back-of-hand impacts. On the front side, Olympia’s soft silicone gel padding helps protect the rider’s palms from engine vibration and steering kickback. A small sample of the gel padding is included in the package so you can actually see and feel the stuff that’s inside. Like all Olympia products that I’ve tried, the fit of the Air Throttle gloves was superb. Finger length is proportional to the width of the glove, and the hidden knuckle protector is flexible enough to avoid fit and movement problems. On the trail, the Air Throttle gloves are simply outstanding. They go on easily and feel great. The hook-and-loop wrist closures provide a secure fit over the sleeves of a riding jersey or a light windbreaker, sealing out drafts and biting insects. Grip feel is good despite the internal gel layer that soaks up bumps transmitted up through the bars. I haven’t really needed the protection of the knuckle guards yet, but I am confident that will do their job when required. Olympia model 790 Air Throttle gloves have a suggested retail price of $34.95 per pair in sizes from Small through Double Extra Large (2XL) and are available in solid black only. Look for them at better dealerships including some listed in the back of this newsletter. For more information on the Air Throttle model and other Olympia products, visit www.olympiagloves.com.
