Volume 15, Issue 9 September 2007 Sherburne Wheelers discuss expanding trails with state, local officials By: Jill Osterhout, Sun Staff Writer The Evening Sun Published on: Friday, August 10, 2007 SHERBURNE – Representatives from various levels of government met with local organization leaders July 27 to discuss building tourism throughout upstate New York. Sherburne Wheeler President and delegate for Region 7 of New York State Off-highway Recreational Vehicle Association Inc. Lex Danyluk, his wife and secretary Donna, and member Dara Arnister met Friday July 27 with Executive Director of New York State Power Dealers Association Bob Ski, Regional Representative for Governor Spitzer’s office Kevin McCabe, Town of Sherburne Supervisor Harry Conley and Village Trustee Bob Smith. Throughout the hour-long meeting topics covered included expanding a trail system for all terrain vehicle riders into Norwich and Edmeston. The Sherburne Wheeler club currently rides a circular loop system trail and hoped to present its expansion of it to local and state officials. Expanding the system would mean more ATV owners would want to register their vehicles here and take advantage of a trail system. “In turn these riders would be spending their money locally and would help to promote lodging, dining and other small businesses in the county,” the group said. Ski explained it took roughly 30 years for snowmobilers to get the public involved. “ATV enthusiasts have only been doing this for the past three or so years, so we are just beginning this venture,” he said. “We know it will take time.” Conley expressed his concern that some citizens might be opposed to the project, saying, “We don’t want to open something the majority of the public does not want.” Ski said, “These riders will be spending money in our own backyards.” The Sherburne Wheelers hope to spread the word and build support for their idea by hosting trail rides throughout August. Each weekend local politicians will be on hand to take to the trails and see what the sport has to offer. “The main purpose is to show these politicians where we ride, how we ride and how we respect the environment and landowners property,” said Donna. She also stated that the club would like to show their guests what it is like to ride as part of a club that is structured and organized. “More importantly, we want them to have a clearer understanding of ATV riding when the bills come before them to build a state-wide trail system and how this would benefit the state economically.” Senator James Seward was in attendance Saturday for a short time to take a trail ride with roughly 16 ATV riders from throughout New York State. Assemblyman Clifford Crouch will be on hand Aug. 11, Assemblyman Pete Lopez will be in the area Aug.18 and the last politician to take to the trails will be Assemblymen Gary Finch, coming Sunday Aug. 26. We started the year with the passing of a good friend and fellow member and went Down Hill after that. I think we all took a good look at how life can be unpredictable, our lives seem to be filled with more each year and become torn on the time to schedule or plan many things. Family and work must come first and at times leaves little for anything else. Last Month I was criticized for reporting the facts that was presented at the time concerning the Snirt Run that was held in Lewis County in the June NYTRO news letter. The Lewis County Snow Pals put on this event and they didn’t appreciate what I had passed on that was communicated by County & State officials concerning the Early Spring Run, which had over 1,000 ATV’s. Not taking into effect the Government escalated costs for repairs compared to what a normal person can do the $30K worth of damage that was done was not totally true. Even though they did make $10,000.00 they did donate $600.00 back to the ATV trail Fund so they would be covered under the TUG HILL Wheelers ATV Club Insurance Policy and have plans for further work to benefit the ATV’s. I have personally put in hundreds of hours working on multi use trails and apologize for upsetting any Snowmobiles' with my report. It is time that all motorized users unite and fight for the lack of NYS Support for everyone. This also brings light to the power of the Internet and what can be taken and misinterpreted. As we Leaders and Clubs we need to look at the Big Picture and Outcome yet we can’t make everyone Happy. With a bad year has come the disbelief or frustration that a person for the price of a meal can’t support a club. I guess times have changed. I sadly laugh that the officials and law enforcement throw in our faces that it took the Snowmobile's 30 years to get where they are, so the ATV’ERS can’t expect something overnight. (I have been working on it for 9 years so far and heard it all). Even though we outnumber them 4 to 1 and fall under a completely different program, which the State does not want to recognize. If they did they wouldn’t be able to continue to pocket the millions of dollars into the general fund. The saying ”UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL” rings home so true. The people out there working and fighting for the ATVers are only 3% of the club members and All the 157 THOUSAND NYS ATVERS are only .05% of the population. Thanks to the reformed NYSORVA and strong fast Leaders that are still out there they may be able to turn things around. Sadly to say I am about fed up with the process. I have had my heart maxed out then strangled shut so many times by the false promises and politics of getting things done. With the closing of the year I am stepping back and working with the new Insurance that we now have on a much smaller picture. With the handful of people who still care we will work on what we can and fire it back up next year. Who Knows maybe the illegal riders will start being ticketed for riding on unopened Roads & Trails and realize that they only have their Back Yard to ride in and decide to spend that Dinner Cost and do something Good. Thank you to all OUR Supporters. Volume 15, Issue 9 Page 8 Sponsors Volume 15, Issue 9 Page 9 Useful Helmet Accessories By David Wells Keep Your Helmet On A helmet is worthless if it flies off your head when it is most needed. And amazingly enough, there are people riding around out there with their chin strap unbuckled, so their helmet is just about guaranteed come off in any incident. Unfortunately many helmets still come with the old fashioned double-D rings or slide buckle to secure the chin strap, and some people just can’t or won’t learn to use those devices correctly. But there is a solution. The Echo Quick Release is an inexpensive, high-quality closure device that exceeds Snell (M-2005) and DOT (FMVSS218) helmet strap retention requirements. Double metal-to-metal contact points inside the small, easy-to-use buckle won’t creep like even the best plastics will. So the Echo Quick Release provides the stable, positive connection necessary to keep the strap buckled tight. Other add-on chin strap releases are available, but they use plastic-to-plastic contact and cannot be relied upon in critical situations. We have used several Echo Quick Releases over the years, and found that this device installs easily in just a couple of minutes with no tools required on almost any contemporary safety helmet. And it’s available in many colors, including black, white, red, yellow, blue, lime green, and purple to match or contrast with any helmet. Best of all, it retails for less than $10, so there is absolutely no excuse for unbuckled chin straps. Echo Quick Release buckles are widely available from better dealers and retail catalogs. If you have problems locating them, contact Echo Products at (702) 345-3880 or go on line at www.echoproducts.com for assistance in locating a source. Insure Your Helmet’s Integrity People always wonder about when to replace a helmet. All safety helmets are made from plastic or fiberglass, and both of those materials definitely lose their strength with age. So most experts recommend replacing a safety helmet every two to five years OR immediately after they have taken a significant impact. It’s the second part of that recommendation that gives people problems. A helmet can be significantly damaged by a nondestructive impact, like falling off a table or a bike onto a concrete floor. Often this kind of damage is not apparent, even if the helmet is toast. But now there is a way to help insure the protective integrity of your safety helmet. The Shok-SpotR™ helmet sensor monitors acceleration for possible damage from falls and other impacts. If the indicator window on the Shok-SpotR turns red, the protective ability of the helmet has been compromised. The user should then destroy the helmet or return it to the manufacturer for a professional inspection. I’ve been using Shok-SpotRs for a couple of years on ATV and snowmobile helmets, and I can say from personal experience that they have zero downside. They install quickly and easily with no tools required, look great on most helmets, and the adhesive keeps them in place through all kinds of weather and riding conditions. So far I haven’t done anything to trip the red indicator on either of the helmets that I have equipped with them, so I can’t Yorba Safety Concepts Shok-SpotR installed on a Z1R off-road helmet. comment on this aspect of their performance from personal experience. Shok-SpotRs are also used by professional racers, which indicates acceptance of their protective abilities and also that they do not detract from vehicle operation in any way. This smallish featherweight device adheres to the back of the helmet with the supplied contact tape, and retails for less than $25. It’s now available in black, gray, red, yellow, navy blue, green, white, and chrome models, so you can pick one that looks good with your particular helmet. If your dealer can’t get the Shok-SpotR, they are available manufacturer- direct on the web site. For more information contact the manufacturer, Yorba Safety Concepts, at (714) 799-2810 or go on line at www.shokspotr. com.
