All applications are due back to OPRHP by *October 13, 2006*. No wheeled-OHV club is known to have ever submitted a successful application in NY, to fund ATV/OHM trail development, or equipment for the purpose. Many snowmobile groomers and hiking trails have benefited, the former which we can live with since this money comes from Federal gas taxes estimated to be used in OHVs. Still much of it goes to non-motorized rails in NY. If we do not attempt to get some of this fund that we paid into by buying gas to ride off-road, shame on us. Report your successes so we can share the good news. Thank you! Thank you, Dale & Julie By David Wells Tea bags aren’t very big. On the other hand, T-Bags ATV Rack Bags are huge. Immense. Gigantic. Humongous. You get the idea. This is a new product line from CDL Enterprises, a California company that has been making high-quality touring luggage under the T-Bags brand name for touring motorcyclists since 1990. Now entering the ATV market to provide top-quality carrying capacity for off-roaders, T-Bags recently introduced their first four- wheeler products, a Front Rack Bag and a Rear Rack Bag. We had a chance to evaluate one of their new ATV Rear Rack Bags, and here’s what we found. It’s About The Construction These bags aren’t going to wimp out and come apart on you. T- Bags engineers their rack bags out of tough 1680-denier black Cordura® nylon or 600-denier Mossy Oak® Breakup camouflage polyester. Black nylon interior compartment liners hide polyethylene board inserts for rigidity and half-inch closed-cell foam for insulation and cushioning. Main compartment seams are double stitched, and weather- resistant self-mending YKK coil zippers are used throughout. The bags also have nineteen strategically-placed bungee cord anchors in addition to the six adjustable one-inch web straps with double-eared plastic quick connectors to attach them to your racks. We noted the Rear Bag was a perfect fit even on the smallish rack of our Suzuki King Quad, and it snapped right on with nothing more than adjusting the length of the web straps. It’s About The Capacity Another way these bags really shine is their almost unbelievable capacity. The central compartment of the Rear Rack Bag measures (Continued on page 9) Volume 14, Issue 9 Page 6 Chapter News NYTRO Central NY Central Chapter News • Jasper Fire Department Ride: good ride, excellent trails (27 Club Officers • Next meeting - October 22 miles long) October 14 at Gander Mountain. Volume 14, Issue 9 Page 8 The BIG T-Bag (con’t) (Continued from page 6) 27-inches wide, almost 12-inches front-to-back, and 13-inches deep. And this is INSIDE, not outside. On each end is an additional compartment 4-inches wide that zips off to become a backpack. The shoulder straps are hidden inside the unit until needed. And each of these end compartments also includes two one-quart bottle holders with reflective insulation that zip flat when not in use, plus an outer pocket for flat items. There’s also a 19-inch by 10-iinch by 2-inch external pocket for anything you might want to access quickly. Total storage capacity is almost 3.5-cubic feet. The Front Rack Bag is a bit smaller, but still a lot larger than almost anything else out there. It’s About The Convenience T-Bags ATV Rack Bags really separate themselves from the competition with convenience. For instance, you will want to carry these bags at some point. So T- Bags has engineered a hideaway carrying handle for you. Just unzip a rear compartment, pop out the 4point web strap carrying handle and snap on the two lose ends with the metal swivel snaps provided. They attach to steel rings on the front of the bag. And T-Bags also figured out that quad riders like to go in the mud, the rain, and the snow. So they provided a unique bungee-bottom fitted rain cover that folds out of another zippered pocket on the back to pop over your bag and keep it dry in wet running. It’s About Time For Something Like This Do you need to tote a lot of stuff on your quad? T-Bags really does have the answer for ATVs. These bags have the carrying capacity you need for the two-day ride around the Baskatong Reservoir in Quebec or several days on the Paiute Trail in Utah. They are ideal for hauling bulky equipment like duck decoys or supplies for a week in a moose-hunting shack. You can even drop a cooler in one as long as you pack things around it to support it. OK, how much? Quality isn’t cheap. These bags have a suggested retail price ranging from $162.95 to $194.95 depending on which bag in which color. But if you need to carry a whole lot of stuff, this is still a lot better than buying a cheap bag and having it fail on you at the wrong time. For more information on T-Bags ATV Rack Bags, check www.tbags. com. Or see your Parts Unlimited dealer to order. About the author: NYTRO member David Wells has been riding all- terrain-vehicles and collecting ATV- related products for over thirty years, so he’s very interested in cargo bags to tote all that useful extra stuff around. He also writes for ATV magazine and numerous other powersports publications. The T-Bags ATV Rear Rack Bag Volume 14, Issue 9 Page 9 Miles Mountain Ride Review By Gary Burns, STNY President On Sunday, September 17th, I and four others went to a ride in Elkland, PA at Miles Mountain. We arrived at around 10:00 am. They have plenty of parking available. After signing the release forms, we unloaded the quads and got ready to go. We registered for the longest distance to the ride and headed out on the trails. The trails were well marked. Being that it had recently rained (not that we had too many dry days this year), the trails were a little muddy. About a 1/2 mile in we ran into a little bottleneck. Someone in a group got hung up and got stuck. We waited a few minutes until he got out. I thought that I would have a problem in the spot, but my 23" Mud Lites took me through easily. Along the way there were checkpoints to stop and draw a chip. If you were lucky the chip would have a number on it. There were prizes at the end with the matching numbers. I didn't get a lucky chip, but Brent Nichols did get a chip with a number on it. He ended up winning a tee-shirt. After riding about an hour we pulled over to take a rest and get a drink. We stopped out in a field as we came out of the woods. Many other people were stopping here as well. As we had our drink and rested someone from another group came over and asked if we had a pump. Rick and Tammy Nichols had a small air compressor. They brought the machine over and we plugged in the air compressor to Pam's as she had the 12 volt outlet. After the tire was inflated we found the puncture in the side. Luckily Tammy had a plug kit as well. We ended up putting in two plugs to fix the tire. He was very happy to have the tire fixed and be able to finish the ride. I found a small compressor at Kmart for $12. I would highly recommend carrying one of these on a ride. We continued on our way until we got to about the halfway point. We stopped again in an open field and had lunch. After lunch we continued on the trails, selecting the advanced path on most of them. There was one that looked pretty gnarly that we bypassed. As we got near the end we stopped at the top of the hill to check out the view, which was incredible. As we were checking out the view, I heard them announce, “Pam and Gary Burns.” Wasn't sure what it was for, but we got on out quads and headed down. We arrived to find out that we had won the longest traveled award. It was a fretwork quad that was created with a scroll saw. I can't imagine the time involved to create it. Brent got his tee- shirt and we loaded up the quads. We then ran into the owner and trail coordinator. We got to talking and they offered to give a tour of the motocross track. Tim lead on his four wheeler and we followed on a mule. I got elected to drive (actually I jumped into the driver's seat). We started around the track and I was amazed at how easily the mule moved on the track. Of course as we got going we had to go down a pretty steep hill. On my quad or bike it wouldn't have bothered me, but on the mule was a little more intense. After we went down the hill we went around a couple of turns and then had to of course go back up a hill. I figured Tim was leading and would know where the mule could go okay so I put the pedal to medal and we headed up the hill. As we got near the top it almost stopped, but we did make it. Rick and Pam were in the back of the mule and were ready to jump if we didn't make it. I was surprised at how stable it was. We finished up going around the track. It is a very nice track, and I am hoping to get back with my bike to give it a try! This was an excellent trail ride. They had around 280 riders for this event. I would say that the trails are intermediate to advanced. For more information go to http:// www.milesmountainmx.com. The trails are open on the weekends for $20 to ride all day. They may have another event later this fall, so make sure to check out their site for info. The weather wasn't the best this year, but we still got to do some excellent riding. Hopefully we’ll still be able to get some good riding in before winter. Hope to see you on the trails. Let's Ride!
