NYTROOHVNewsNewYorkTrailRidersOrganization,Inc. Volume17,Issue9October2009NYTROOHVNewsNewYorkTrailRidersOrganization,Inc. Volume17,Issue9October2009 DemonRunATVPokerRunOctober10th,2009 The third Poker Run at Demon Run was a fun time for everyone. The trails were in great condition for a ride. Unfortunately the weather could have been better. Rain the day before and the morning of most likely caused some people to not come out for the ride. We had around the same number of people that we had last October. Besides the trails, we had the mud pit, obstacle course, Fun Pulls, and a corn maze. Did I just say corn maze, yes! There was a corn maze for ATVs. I have been on a lot of ATV rides, and I have never seen a corn maze for ATVs. The corn maze was setup on eighteen acres. As you started into the maze it started out simply with a choice of right or left. If you went to the right it brought you back to within a few feet of the start. This wasn’t too bad, but as you got further in there were more choices of left or right, and then more choices of left or right off of those. Then there was not just left or right, but four different choices. And of course choices off each one of the four choices. And being that you are in the middle of a corn field, all you see is corn, corn and more corn. The amount of time for people to get out of the corn maze varied from a few minutes to over two hours! There were a couple of riders who after riding five miles cut their own trail out as they couldn’t find the exit. There was one spot that was on the wrong trail, but it came within a few rows of the exit. People could see out, but the trail wasn’t there to get out. We posted someone there to stop more people from going out that way unless they had given up. Even Leroy who had been in and out of the maze several times would find himself on the wrong trail and have to go around again. Leroy did rescue quite a few people who couldn’t find their way out. We did have arrows posted, but with all the rain some of them had fallen off or gotten run over. We were trying to not have any collisions. One thing that some people need to remember is that it isn’t a race and to go slow. And the corn that is still standing will be used and to not knock down any more than necessary. Overall I think that most people enjoyed the corn maze. It was a lot of work to set this up. I hope that we can do it again next year, but will have to wait and see. If we decide to do it again, we will make sure to have some “I give up” exits so that people have other ways out. The mud pit, as always, was a gathering place. There was one guy on a Kawasaki that was in the mud pit for hours. He got stuck a couple of times, but would get pulled out and go right back in. He was even doing wheelies. At one point he did a wheelie and got stuck with the front wheels in the air. He had to fall off and push the machine down. Below the mud pit was a flat area that was muddy on top. At the end of the day there was a group of machines spraying mud on each other. When one got stuck, the others would spray him with mud. They had several inches of mud piled on them! They were at this for forty-five minutes. We had to stop them so that we could finish tearing down and leave. Everyone that I talked to enjoyed the trails. One rider commented how much the signage had improved from our first Poker Run. We didn’t have a lot of UTVs, but the ones that I talked to had a great time. They said there were some tight spots, but they were able to get through. They were on a Polaris Ranger which is one of the bigger UTVs. If you have ever worked an ATV event, you know how much work goes into setting things up. Keeping the trails clear takes a lot of time. You can have them clear one day, and have a storm come through and knock down several trees. Demon Run trails are kept clear by various members who have come out for work parties. We can always use help, so try and sign up for a work party. It is work, but is also good to get out into the fresh air. Besides the work parties, we have Carl Taft who rides the trails often and works hard to keep things cleared. Many thanks go to Carl for keeping the trails clear. I have been riding for several years. I like to open up my machine, but I also know when not to. We are losing places to ride because of people who ride on the road or tear up places that they need to go slow in, or riding in places that ATVs are prohibited. At Demon Run the roads are not open to ATVs. We have road crossings, but riding down the road is not permitted. Also, don’t rip up the parking area, go slow through the campground and stay on the trails at all times. By following these simple rules we can continue to ride and maybe get more places to ride. There have been many riding areas closed down due to a couple of riders who don’t follow the rules. Don’t be one of those riders. Let’s Ride! To start off, I was chastised for speaking out and criticizing our neighboring county and region for the double standards that have been taking place. I was out of line and APOLOGIZE for my past newsletter comments which were improper in the support and positive advancement to our Regional Trail Development. I apologize for my negative attitude to the regional trail advancement. I will no longer compare our County Trail management plans & policies to other counties. Each county has their own leadership and policy. Sometime their interpretation or visions differ from others. The personal conflicts should not deter the progress on a whole. Our PRIVATE Trails will be shutting down for hunting season September 28 to December 13. I have not heard from our County Coordinator on the status of the County Reforestation Trails. These are legal hunting areas and most of the hunters do use ATVs to recover game or get to a favorite hunting area. Maybe while I am making our closed signs I will post warnings signs for the OPEN Public County woodland trails. My goal depending on getting the dozer fixed is to reopen the Lorraine loop to a semi groomed trail that you can cross country ski or snow shoe on during the Winter months. Our Trail Insurance is in place with one major event to be scheduled for next year. With the funds running low we will try and raise funds over the winter and seek business support. To recap 2009, we have made some major progress. We had landowners not only sign on to the Trail system but actively supported the Trail construction and club operations. With the private and County trails in place we were able to legally open the roads to connect and create a new Southern Jefferson Trail System. This legally connected Oswego thru Jefferson into Lewis County. We went from a small handful of members to over 100 new members. We provide free membership to the officers and landowners. We gave an economic impact to the community and they provided much support to help continue our expansion and building process. To date following Multi Use Trail Standards we have installed seven culverts giving not only our ATV riders a safe trail but also allowing the Landowners better access to the property. With the culverts and trail ways construction, also came the fill. We had 12 truck loads delivered. We purchased and installed over 80 Trail poles and signs. On the county lots we cut over 200 storm damaged trees to maintain an open and safe Trail system. We transported and installed 20 logs to a cording site which has worked great for another wet spot to safely and environmentally friendly way of trail development. I Thank Dennis, Shawn, Rick and Jeff for there personal tractors and equipment used to make the Base Trails System construction possible. We had a combined man hour log in excess of 1000 hours creating the trails. What does 2010 look like for the Northern Chapter? The late start in road openings we encountered in ‘09 has been resolved so we will have an early advantage to start planning events for fund raising in the spring. Membership and business support will dictate the season. Our Club still has a major need for a 4wd tractor to mow and construct and maintain the trails. We need to look for a means to be able to transport fill into the needed areas. We need to pursue and obtain a working agreement with the County to expand the open Reforestation lots. We need members to step up and share in the Club leadership roles and committees to bring it all together. So in closing may you and your Families have a safe and enjoyable winter and look forward to seeing you all in the spring. For the multi users Winona Forest is hub of activities to fill your outdoor desires and encourage everyone to support our neighbors. Until we meet on the Trails Ride Safe. Dave (585) 334-0122 or dwells@rochester.rr.com The Polaris KTP Dual Sport Helmet By David Wells With more and more quad riders showing up in street or snowmobile helmets, I decided to examine how a Dual Sport helmet would work for ATV riding. Essentially an off-road helmet with a full face shield instead of provisions for goggles, this type has been around for several years. But now there’s a new crop of popularly priced Dual Sport helmets including this Polaris KTP model. There’s nothing particularly remarkable here. The acrylonitile butadiene styrene (ABS) outer shell has a very stylish short visor that can be adjusted to where the rider wants it. A single lens polycarbonate shield pivots under the visor extensions on the side of the helmet. However, this helmet does have a quick release chin strap which is rarely found in this price range, or most other price ranges any more. Like most helmets these days, the head liner is removable and washable. This helmet didn’t take much getting used to on the trail, and after a few minutes I was really sold on the idea. Peripheral vision is much, much better than with any goggles, and pushing the shield up at a trail break is a lot easier that fumbling around with goggles. It is still possible to wear sunglasses under the shield, but there isn’t a lot of room for big ear pieces on the glasses. Despite three vents in the front of the chin bar, I did find that I wanted to ride with the shield cracked open a little bit. Even half-an-inch was enough to provide nice cooling air on my face on a warm day. Riding at speeds up to 50 mph, I noted that the air flow through the visor seemed to be very good and I did not detect any lift from it. Of course, it wasn’t long before a big juicy bug committed suicide on the shield. I wiped it off as best I could with my gloved finger, and it didn’t cause any problems. Some rain later on washed away the remains. And when the precipitation got intense, the shield really helped keep my face dry. The one down side I found is that this helmet is hard to clean. The face shield should be removed and flushed with plenty of clear water to clean it. That means removing the pivot screws that also hold the visor in place. They are located under a pair of snap-off covers on the sides. Putting everything back together seems like one of those jobs that needs four hands, but you can do it by yourself as long as you are patient. Polaris intends to sell this helmet to riders of all brands so there’s no brand identification, just one small Polaris decal that can be installed if desired. The DOT-certified KTP helmet is available in sizes from S to 2XL with a soft protective bag included for just $99.99. The only current color is gloss black, but additional color choices are coming later on. For more information and to try one on, see your Polaris ATV dealer.
