NYTRO OHV NewsNew York Trail Riders Organization, Inc. Volume 15, Issue 10 October 2007 NYTRO OHV NewsNew York Trail Riders Organization, Inc. Volume 15, Issue 10 October 2007 PowerMadd Handguard Mirrors By David Wells Quad riders are just beginning to figure out something that snowmobilers discovered long ago, specifically that rear view mirrors make group riding a lot easier. Mirrors allow you to keep track of the riders behind you, say your wife or your kids or the all- important guy with the beverage cooler. Using mirrors means that you don’t have to continually take your eyes off the trail and twist around to check on their progress over logs, through mud holes, and up and down steep slopes. But choosing the right mirror or mirrors can be a problem. Hand-mount mirrors are inexpensive, install easily on your glove, and easy to use once you accept that you have to take your hand off the handlebar. But that’s really not a good idea on a rough-as-a-cob ATV trail. Plus, every time you put your hand up, the riders behind you think that you are going to stop. Experience has also taught me that the hand strap on these often doesn’t last beyond the first good obstacle, either. So hand mirrors just aren’t the right solution. You could add one of those mirrors that goes on the end of the handlebars. But your arms will partially block the view, and they will extend far enough out to be a problem in certain situations. Of course, you could mount a set of street motorcycle mirrors. They’re nice and big and they really work well. They also prevent you from using a cover on your quad, can interfere with low-hanging obstacles, and will probably get broken off if the machine rolls over. So they probably aren’t the best solution, either. How about the PowerMadd® Mirrored Hand Guards? Now this one has real promise. Another Kind Of Mirror Mount PowerMadd is a Minnesota-based power sports accessory manufacturer who has a catalog that’s chuck full of all sorts of useful products and gadgets like the Hat Sack, the Power FlexBar, and the Rider Hold Tight. The Mirror system is an accessory to their very well conceived and executed Star Series Hand Guards. The guards protect your hands from brush, big bugs, small stones kicked up by the quad in front, and similar annoyances. The versatile Star Series includes a snap-out cover to provide venting for hot weather but closes up for cooler temperatures. It’s available in seventeen colors and color combinations to match virtually any recreational vehicle you can imagine. And there are a variety of add-on accessories that include an oversize vent cover for cold weather riding, a hand wrap attachment, and a Yamaha Parking Brake Adapter for a Raptor or a Banshee. But it’s the mirrors we’re interested in here. They mount directly to the hand guards and can be used with most of the other options. Installation requires a power drill with drill bits and a 4mm hex wrench and only takes a few minutes. Each side gets a 2-inch diameter, slightly convex spot mirror that can be rotated 360-degrees for optimal viewing purposes. And maybe the best news is that when installed, the mirrors are still inside the maximum width and height of the vehicle. They are small enough and tight enough to the handlebars that they won’t interfere with most covers, including the trailerable types that cocoon the handlebars separately. On The Trail Performance After spending several days riding with a set of these mirrors installed on my Suzuki King Quad, I concluded that they are just what the doctor ordered, at least most of the time. The mirrors can be easily adjusted by simply turning them for the best viewing position, and I found that I occasionally wanted to adjust them on the fly as the riding situations changed. That’s easily done assuming that it’s safe to take a hand off the handlebars. On tight two-tracks in the woods, the PowerMadd mirrors work very well. There is absolutely no problem keeping close track of a rider who is a few feet, or even a few yards behind you. And you may be able to see one or two more that are farther back depending on the trail configuration and rider spacing. PowerMadd Star Series Handguard with accessory mirror installed. On long straight-aways where riders tend to stretch out more, you may want to slightly re-aim the mirrors for a better perspective on riders behind you. And they still work well with one exception. If it’s a dirt road with clouds of dust, you are just not going to see much in these mirrors. Of course, you aren’t going to see much in any mirror that is covered with dust anyway, so that’s kind of a moot point. Accumulated dust does wipe off easily with a gloved finger or a soft cloth, and you will have to do it frequently if you ride in dusty conditions. Otherwise, it’s set them and glance down occasionally to see how the rider following you is doing. The mirrors are also useful for backing up in pretty much any situation, including getting off the trailer or moving your machine around a crowded area. Even if you aren’t used to hand guards, they just don’t get in the way or cause unnecessary problems like hand mirrors or big street bike mirrors. And the non-interference with covers is real key as far as I am concerned. The Bottom Line The really excellent PowerMadd Star Series Hand Guards list for $34.95 to $44.95 depending on color, with the ATV Mount kit an additional $19.95. And the Mirror accessory set is $19.95 per pair on top of that, bringing the total up to $74.85 minimum. But that’s not so bad since you are also getting excellent hand protection at the same time. The mirrors carry a one-year warranty on materials and workmanship. If you are looking for a way to add mirrors to your machine without compromising something else, the PowerMadd Mirrored Hand Guard system deserves a close look. They are available through most power sports dealerships. Or go on line at www.powermadd.com for more information. We had heard about it and wanted to try it out. When we arrived the road into the park was backed up, so we parked along the side and walked down to sign in. The cost was $30 each and we also had to buy a flag for $12. The flag purchase is only needed once and instantly IDs you as having paid! Also, with the flag you don't have to fill out paperwork the next time, just sign the liability release, pay and ride. You must have insurance on your quad and it should be registered (you will be asked for this information on the registration form). The parking area is well marked and fairly large. We unloaded and got out on the trails. There were probably 50 quads and bikes there. For the most part everyone was good about following the rules. Of course, there was a group with people spinning up rocks in the parking area and riding around without helmets. Hopefully Lost Trails will not tolerate this and those folks won't be allowed back. The trails range from beginner to very advanced (green, blue, red, and black). Black is only for four-wheel drives and it’s recommended that you have a winch. We didn't ride any of the black trails. The trails are marked pretty well. They have 1200 acres, but the amount of trails is limited at this time. There is a nice play area with hill climbs, mud pits, and a small loop with different obstacles. It is a nice place to ride, but a little expensive for the amount of trails. Hopefully that will change as they add more. For more information go to http://www.ridelosttrails.com. ***** Next club meeting: 7:00 PM, Tuesday, November 13th at Gander Mountain in Johnson City. All recreational user groups where asked to attend, seeking support to pursue the abandonment of the Rail Line and opening a Multi-Use Trail System from Lowville to Carthage. As everything seems to go, they would like the clubs’ help but are not sure of the funding at this time. It was mentioned that there may be a fee or permit process, so time will tell. There where several DOT and State groups there and the ATV inclusion in the project was will received. After our last Northern Chapter NYTRO meeting was in September, we will not be meeting again until spring. Depending on the Political Forces at work within our county we will have to wait and see where the Northern Chapter Stands and in which direction we plan to proceed. Hunting Season is upon us and hopefully with some luck we will be able to fill our freezers early and move on to fall trail work. We have added a 5' bush hog mower and post hole digger to my equipment list. With my new tri axle goose-neck trailer we can now mobilize the equipment to various trails as we grow. Over the winter I plan on pursuing the purchase of a dump trailer which will round out our needs to develop the trail base and repair wet spots. Even though we have had a record dry spell I have managed to bury the Club tractor twice. The first time my small dozer was unable to pull it from the swamp I ended up in and had to call on a neighbor who responded with a monster 4WD that made it look so easy. My new ATV Warn winch with the snatch block worked well the second time I dropped into a ditch. Last month I was excited for awhile when I found a local tractor dealer had taken in a mid size Kubota 4WD back hoe. It didn't last long, when the price of $28K was mentioned as giving us a deal. Oh well, something for us to work on down the road. Trails are still being discussed at this time from the county legislators. It is hard at times to envision a master trail plan when the local government continues to tell you, "You live here now ride where you want." Now that we are able to offer insurance many landowners are considering legalizing their land so that the rampant illegal riding can be brought back under control. In wrapping up I wish all and their families a Safe and Happy Fall. ~ Later Michael B ~ NYTRO of NNY Volume 15, Issue 10 Page 6 Chapter News NYTRO Western NY Club Officers President: Dale Mackey Email: rb757@aol.com Phone: 716-549-6118 Vice President: Norm Queeno Email: dajokerman72@yahoo.com Phone: 716-941-6280 Treasurer: Julie Mackey Email: rb757@aol.com Phone: 716-549-6118 Secretary: Sandy Queeno Email: dajokerman72@yahoo.com Phone: 716-941-6280 * * * * * Check out our Yahoo!
