Let’s take a quick look at some of the highlights for model year 2006. The Suzuki King Quad is back pretty much unchanged. Named ATV of the Year by ATV Maga zine, the line leader from the company who invented quads has collected a mountain of praise from the four wheeler press since its introduction. Featuring a DOHC fuel-injected 700 single cylinder engine that is slanted forward 48-degrees to drop the center of gravity for better stability, the sporty King Quad offers an exceptionally good power-to-weight ratio. It is now available in all-black (and we do mean all) or Advantage ® Max-4 camouflage, plus a new shade of dark green in addition to the carry-over red version. Bombardier’s new Outlander 800 will definitely contend for top honors this season. With an exceptionally powerful fuel-injected V-twin engine in a slightly lengthened version of BRP’s unique Surrounding-Spar chassis, the 800 is available in both single and two-seat MAX versions. The redesigned MAX passenger seat can be interchanged with a combo rack and storage box. Returning Outlander 400 H.O. models get the same new front fascia with brighter lights and new steel racks as used on the new 800, but the nice-priced Outlander 330 is history. The Tracksters with their unique step-through seating were also discontinued, but variants continue as John Deere Bucks. Arctic Cat offers a new bright orange Tony Stewart signature-edition 650 V2 LE for those who want the last word in sport utility quads. Cat’s two-rider TRV gets the sleek new styling that made its debut on the company’s powerful 650 H1 last season, plus improved passenger accommodations. You may not recognize the 250 Cat because it is completely redesigned, and the 300 is gone. Arctic’s brand new and rakishly styled side-by-side two- seater is called the Prowler, and it uses the Minnesota manufacturer’s own 641cc single-cylinder engine. Polaris lengthens their popular Sportsman series with the 500 X2 that transforms into a two-seater, and the mil-spec MV7 heavy-duty model that will appeal to farmers and big game hunters. There’s also a Sportsman 500 EFI, and it is available in camo for hunters. Several smaller, lighter, and more economical models also debut this year. The all-new Hawkeye 300 includes independent rear suspension with on-demand AWD or less-expensive 2WD. The new Outlaw is a 500 class sport quad with a true independent rear suspension. Yamaha has completely reworked their popular sport quads. The all-new Raptor 700R has a slightly larger engine featuring fuel injection plus a long list of frame and running gear improvements. The YFZ 450 also has a long list of improvements including a slight increase in engine displacement and power, and now comes in a choice of blue or white. Several new outdoors editions of the Grizzly, Kodiak 450, and Rhino have appeared, with many in camo, and there’s also a new Rhino 450 side-by-side model in dark green only. Kawasaki’s highly-regarded Brute Force 750 V-twin returns with more color choices. In addition to red, green, and two different camo patterns including an exclusive with Realtree Hardwoods Snow®, the big guy is now available in a smooth silver finish. The new Brute Force 650 provides a more economical version for those who don’t need the massive power of the 750. Honda continues to concentrate on unique features, and their 2006 Rincon, Rubicon, and Rancher GPScape variants all include integral Geographic Positioning Systems. Black is a new additional color choice for the liquid-cooled 500 Rubicon and air-cooled 475 Rancher, while blue is a new choice on the 650 Rincon. Each manufacturer offers a wide variety of models to fit specific needs and budgets, and we don’t have room to begin cover them all here. See your local NYTRO member dealership for a look at all the choices in each company’s 2006 line up. The measure provides $370 million from gasoline taxes to fund the Recreational Trails Program. The bill also preserves two other rules important to many motorcyclists: Motorcycles will continue to be allowed to use High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes; and local governments will continue to be prohibited from excluding motorcycles on roads maintained in part with federal funds. The bill also calls for motorcycles to be included in research on Intelligent Transportation systems, which would introduce more automation to US highways. A new federal report on off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation in the United States shows popularity of motorizedrecreation among diverse ethnic communities. The study, published by the USDA Forest Service’s Southern Research Station, shows OHV use is widely recognized now as one of the fastest growing outdoor activities. The report was prepared for the Forest Service in relation to a National OHV policy initiative expected to be finalized in August 2005. The policy will direct forests to designate roads, trails and areas available for OHV use. The source of the data is the National Survey on Recreation and Environment (NSRE). NSRE is a collaborative project between the Forest Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee. The study showed the proportion of people age 16 and older who said they participated in OHV recreation increased from 16.8 percent in 1999-2000 to 23.8 percent in 2003-2004. It also shows that Hispanic participation grew at the fastest percentage rate, more than doubling between 1999 and 2004. The African-American participation growth rate also outpaced that of Whites, growing 50 percent compared to 36 percent for Whites. The report can be found at: http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/ohv/OHV_final_report.pdf Texas has become the 19th state in the nation to have an off-highway vehicle program to create and maintain riding areas and trails. That's thanks to the hard work of AMA Community Council leader Carol Smith, the Motorcycle Industry Council and others. The new program, which takes effect September 1, will use money from a fee for OHV decals, and fines assessed against OHV users who violate OHV laws, to acquire, construct, develop and maintain riding areas and trails. Smith, director of the AMA Community Council-Texas Hill Country, joined forces with AMA Government Relations Department staff in Pickerington, Ohio, and the Motorcycle Industry Council to make the program a reality. AMA Legislative Affairs Specialist Royce Wood said Richard Hardy, the local lobbyist for the Motorcycle Industry Council, did a good job guiding the legislation through the Texas Legislature. Smith was instrumental in testifying and letting lawmakers know how important an OHV program is not only for OHV enthusiasts, but for the Texas economy. If you would like to work on trails issues in your state, the easiest way is through an AMA Community Council, which is a group of local AMA activists. For information on AMA Community Councils, contact AMA Grassroots Manager Terry Lee Cook at (614) 856-1900, ext. 1288; by e-mail at tcook@ama-cycle.org; or by mail at 13515 Yarmouth Dr., Pickerington, OH 43068. AMA Government Relations News & Notes is a monthly service compiled and edited by the AMA Government Relations Staff to keep motorcyclists informed of happenings around the world. We welcome your news & views. Please submit all material to Terry Lee Cook, Grassroots Manager, 13515 Yarmouth Drive, Pickerington, OH 43147; fax 614-856-1920 or e-mail to tcook@ama-cycle.org.
