There's a public hearing set for next week in Watertown. But, all terrain vehicle enthusiasts from across the North Country decided they needed to go to a hearing in Syracuse Thursday to rally against a state plan that would limit ATV access on some public lands. Members of at least ten local ATV clubs put their four-wheelers on the backs of pickup trucks and trailers to form a convoy from Watertown to Syracuse. The Parishville Area ATV Club placed a large banner on its truck, "The Nation's Tree Huggers Buy NY Government. The NY Taxpayers Pay The Bills. Let Us Use Our Land." "The state has their properties open to all user groups--snowmobiles, hikers, fishermen, hunters. They even have hang glider launch sites. But, they continue tonot have any access to ATVs," said David Beyer, a member of several ATV clubs. Beyer said the state collects more than $1 million annually from ATV registration fees and should allow ATVers to use public land. However, some environmental groups support tougher restrictions on ATVs, which can damage the land. "We care about the environment and we want to be able to ride," said Kathy LaMay of the Tri-Town ATV Trail-riders Club. In the 1990s, the state opened trails in many forest preserves, but reversed course last year. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is holding public hearings on the proposed rules across the state. ROCHESTER DEC ATV DRAFT POLICY MEETING From Matt Ryder The meeting went well. And THANK YOU to all who attended. Over 100 in attendance, in addition to the DEC personnel. At least 3 dealers where there, as well as the Polaris Regional and NATIONAL Representatives. Although dealer and manufacturer participation should be better at all the meetings. 95% of those attending were for public ATV trails. Our comments were positive and everyone was polite. I think we may have even convinced a few environmentalist that managed, public ATV trails is the right thing to do for New York's environment (and economy). I was interviewed by the Rochester paper (Democrat and Chronicle). I was also interviewed by Channel 13 (ABC) and aired on the 11 PM News; no environmentalists were aired. We got a decent article in the on-line version of the Democrat and Chronicle: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti cle?AID=/20050505/NEWS01/505050327 Wouldn't you know some idiot just had to get us some bad publicity the same night: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti cle?AID=/20050505/NEWS01/505060360 The fight is far from over, though.
