NYTRO OHV News New Y o rk Tra il Rid e rs O r g a n i za tion , In c. Volume 14, Issue 6 June 2006 Examining the Z1R Rail Helmet By David Wells There are literally dozens of brands of safety helmets on the market. So how do you choose your head protection something other than a neat appearance and a nice price? You take a critical look at the protection and wearability of the helmet, that’s how. So let’s take a look at one of our current favorites, the Z1R Rail Apex off-road helmet. Protection, Fit, and Comfort First, there’s the protection issue. As a practical matter, all safety helmets sold in the United States must meet U.S. Department Of Transportation (DOT) specifications for minimum protection. The key word here is minimum. However, if you want something better, look for the Snell Foundation rating. Most Snell testing criteria are tougher than DOT requirements, and Snell raises the bar every five years. Look for the letter M (for motorcycle) ahead of a calendar year ending in a 0 or a 5 for the Snell certification level that is appropriate for ATV riding. We should note that the Z1R Rail Apex was engineered before the current M2005 specifications went into effect, so it is rated M2000, but this still provides a superior level of protection compared to many other helmets on the market. Physically, the Rail’s outer shell is a blend of ABS and Polycarbonate that provides both strength and resiliency. Inside is a dual-density polystyrene mid-liner. But this isn’t just any liner. One of the keys to helmet comfort is proper fit. Although these helmets are made in Asia, Z1R utilizes a round/oval head form that fits our North American heads better than the helmets made with a round head shape. This more correct fit eliminates pressure points that can cause discomfort and even outright pain on all- day rides. Since we’ve had these problems with other oriental-made helmets in our household, this point is really key to our evaluation of this product. Personally, I find the Rail to be one of the most comfortable helmets I have ever worn. A comfortable Nylex interior liner is next to the rider’s head. The cheek pads snap out for cleaning, too. Comfort is also enhanced by a four-port ventilation system to move air through the crown of the helmet plus a large screened chrome vent up front. One feature I particularly like about this helmet is the unusually long chin bar. This extended protector removes the claustrophobic feelings of some other helmets as well as helping air circulation around the face, definitely what you want on a hot summer day. Air circulation behind the chin bar is excellent, far exceeding some other moto-cross style helmets I have tried. I also found that this extended chin bar does not cause problems viewing the instrumentation on the handlebars of my quad, putting on my riding glasses, or even using a fairly large camera while I have the helmet on my head. The Peripherals Up on top, the larger than average sun visor is vented with wide slots to reduce aerodynamic lift. However, with this much surface area, lift is inevitable at speed. Some users have also commented that they would like the visor angle lower for various reasons, and Z1R’s visor does (Continued on page 11) Newsletter Article Submissions: nytroatvny@aol.com Check us out on the web at http://www.nytroatv.org Chapter Information NYTRO of Western NY 676 Madison Ave, Angola, NY 14006 (716) 549-6118 - rb757@aol.com Co-Presidents – Dale & Julie Mackey Serving Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming, Genesee, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties NYTRO of the Southern Tier 1111 Carrie Ave, Endicott NY 13760 (607) 786-0676 - director@nytrostier.org Website: www.nytrostier.org President – Gary Burns Serving Broome, Chemung, Tioga, Stueben, Tompkins, Schuyler, Seneca and parts of Onondaga and surrounding Counties NYTRO of Central NY P.O. But they let their line go stale and their market share shrank to also-ran status. Returning with a vengeance at the millennium, they have introduced one hit product after another in the last half dozen seasons. Their new flagship, the King Quad, was introduced last year to truly rave reviews. ATV magazine named it “ATV of the Year.” But that wasn’t all. 4-Wheel ATV Action named it “Editor’s Choice”, and several other publications gave it their top honors or best in class rating. It won big bore utility quad shootouts in Dirt Wheels and ATV Rider. Doug Meyer of ATV Television let it slip that the King Quad is his favorite ride, and we note that he is on one every time they do a major trail ride story. Even American Hunter gave the new King Quad an award. With these kinds of ringing endorsements, we wanted to see for ourselves what made the new King Quad so outstanding. So with the cooperation of American Suzuki and Stone’s Snow Sleds in Newark, we tried out the new King Quad. Here’s what we found. Engineered To Please The very first thing we discovered is that the all-black version of the King Quad looks a lot better in person than in the photos we’ve seen including what’s on Suzuki’s web site. Some vehicles are just like that. But this is just scratching the surface. At the heart of the King Quad is a 695cc dual overhead cam (DOHC) single- cylinder four-cycle engine with electronic fuel injection instead of a carburetor. Tilted forward at 48-degrees to lower the center of gravity, this engine is one of the very best features of the machine. As a single incorporating numerous lightweight components, this engine weighs significantly less than the two- cylinder engines found in many big-bore quads. Yet thanks to double balance shafts and rubber engine mounts, the King Quad engine idles and runs much smoother than other big-bore singles, which makes it the best of both worlds. Fuel injection means no choke to fiddle with, and actual trail experience in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest showed fuel economy exceeding 25 miles per gallon. Some reviewers have downgraded this fuel injection system for hard starting when warm, but our experience shows this is probably an operator issue. It simply doesn’t want to be fed gas when starting hot. There’s also a back-up recoil starter, and the engine can be started in gear as long as a brake is depressed. The power of the 700 single is more than sufficient for anyone with any common sense. We found it had more than adequate power for some very tough climbs that we tried in the National Forest. And it will go down the road or the trail way faster than anyone probably ought to ride it. Power is transferred to the shaft drives by the QuadraMatic™ constantly variable V-belt transmission (CVT). The gear shifter is in a multi-Z-gate on the left front fender. I can’t say that I’m crazy about the Z-gate design, preferring the T-handle shifter on the Suzuki Vinson, but the gate does work OK. Four-wheel drive is engaged with push-button on the right handlebar, and the excellent limited-slip front differential can be locked (in low gear only) with a switch over the push button for really tough going. Underneath, independent double A-arm suspension with five position adjustable shock absorbers at both ends provide the best overall combination of ride and handling that I have yet experienced on any ATV. You won’t get seasick on this IRS quad like you will on the ponderous, tall, softly suspended machines from some companies. And you can hustle it through the fast sweepers without the nervous rear end twitch and wishywashy feeling that characterizes so many of the other IRS quads. Yet this rear suspension will still devour the bumps far better than anything with a swing axle rear end. Over ten inches of ground clearance is certainly adequate for just about anything out there. The brakes are hydraulic discs up front and a sealed oil-bath three disc pack in the rear, and with the separate controls that are seemingly preferred by the majority of experienced riders. We didn’t do any competitive brake tests, but the relatively low weight of the King Quad combined with the fade-resistant characteristics of the brakes should give this machine the stopping edge over a lot of competitive rides. A simple parking brake is standard, too. The 4.6-gallon gas tank is located low under the back of the seat to keep the center of gravity low. Full floorboards have a lot of void area for good drainage and integrated aluminum pegs that aren’t too high or too low. We also noted that we could easily attach a Moose fender bag that would have required drilling holes to mount on a Vinson or an Eiger. There’s also a complete instrument package and a 12-volt power outlet, and the third headlight is independently switchable. Storage is better than average with both a good rear box and Suzuki’s unique water resistant compartment in the right front fender. The smallish racks have a crackle finish that we think is a huge improvement over simply painting the steel tubing. The club meeting/ride/picnic was enjoyed by the 27 members in attendance. Thankfully, we were able to have the picnic in the shade, as the weather was in the 90’s! We had all kinds of dishes to pass, and plenty of food to eat. And lots of drinks! The kids had lots of fun splashing through the creek nearby on their quads, and playing in the mud in the field on the other side. ~ Pam Burns Volume 14, Issue 6 Page 5 Chapter News NYTRO Northern NY Please note that the Secretary was unable to make the meeting and my little tape recorder failed to record the meeting so I am doing the best of my ability to recap the meeting. Mike Bellinger Date: 5/15/06 Present: 16 Members and Guests Introduction of Guests: Jefferson County Trail Coordinator Scott Burto JCATV President – Joe Onyon The floor was opened to our guests for their presentation. They explained what would be happening as the County seeks to get trails open. The reforest lands will require a SEEKER, the same as what is being done in Lewis County. Current ATV use on County land will not be banned at this point while the review is under way. Prior to the meeting pres. Mike Bellinger & Joe Onyon gave Scott a quick tour of some of the Washington Park Trails. It was obvious that due to a lack of a trail maintenance plan, the trails had deteriorated quickly. It was also noticed that illegal dumping is taking place there, and violators are be prosecuted. Scott not only had the challenge of the park trails, but also had to tame Debbie Ballinger’s Bombardier. The Bombardier lived up to its reputation and got stuck in a mud hole. During the meeting, it was discussed that the club had several ideas to help improve some of the County Parcels. We where informed that our help would be welcomed but we must first have an insurance policy in place to work on County Land. We will look into the cost of a policy and discuss it in the future. Minutes from the last meeting: April minutes where read and motion made by Mike Casler and sec. By Chester Vrooman MP Treasure’s Report: Is available upon request for our members in good standing Communications: Adams will be having a 4th of July parade if anyone was interested. (Unless someone is willing to chair and coordinate the summer parades we may not be attending.) Committees: Chicken Barbeque: Almost everything went well, with almost a complete sell out. What was left was used as the refreshment for the Adopt a highway clean up. Thank you to all those that helped and a special thanks to Larry Rudd for once again providing the charcoal and for also cooking the food. Trails: Sandy Creek Park Trail bridge project is nearing completion. The decking is in place and rails will be scheduled for installation. There are still some widow makers that need to be removed, wet spots dealt with, and some more trimming to be done. Membership: We have had 3 new Single and 4 new Family memberships added to our club since April of this year, and encourage all members to seek new applicants. There is 5,700 registered ATV’ers in Jefferson County so they are out there. As of our meeting we have 69 memberships with 147 members. We still have 25 members to renew. So please send in your renewals. Old Business: Brasher Falls Camping. Even though there will again be a shortage of campsites, it was felt that there would be a good turn out and that we should not cancel the trip. We are looking for suggestions on alternatives for next year. Hopefully we will be able to get an update on legal trails there. Currently it appears only those trails in the Park are open, and that the Iron Works trail to the CC camp is closed. Rides: the Back River Club reminded everyone about the first all county ride May 20th at Montague Inn hosted. Our clubs Camping weekend and ride at Tuggers in June will most likely will be canceled due to lack of access out of BC. The other portion of the ride was going to be a work detail, and since we will not be able to work on the county land as planned without insurance, it appears the weekend will be canceled. It was suggested to see at the JCATV meeting on May 18th, what the other Clubs have planned, and possibly have a ride on the Rivergate Trail. The ride would start at Philly and go to Theresa. More to follow. New Business: The Jefferson County ATV Clubs Inc. dues are due for the year. Which is $100.00. Motion to pay by Mike Casler 2Nd by Ralph Miller MP Next meeting will be held at Brasher Fall 6:00 at the presidents tent. Election of officers and committee appointments. If you wish to help and are not able to attend, contact a club officer. If we don’t get some help we will have to change some plans for the future. A small handful of people can not do all the work. Towing capacity is rated at 992 pounds after you supply a ball for the hitch. Overall unit weight is claimed to be 601pounds dry, making it one of the lightest big bore utility quads available. The Bottom Line One of the best things about the King Quad is the price. With a suggested list of $7,299, it certainly isn’t inexpensive. But it is priced below just about every other big bore (over 500cc) sport utility, and significantly below most of them. And it is one of the least expensive fuel injected sport utility quads currently available. Color choices are jet black, bright red, olive green, and Advantage® Max-4™ HD camouflage is available for an extra $300. What this all adds up to is a truly outstanding product. Suzuki has definitely upped the ante for the entire ATV industry with this machine. You can find a machine with more power, or more ground clearance, or a softer ride, but you won’t find one with a better all-around performance envelope, especially for this kind of money. Riders and reviewers can argue about whether or not it is the absolute best quad out there, but it definitely gets my vote for that distinction. So no matter how you look at it, the King Quad rules. The slot on the middle visor support can be filed deeper to allow the visor to be pulled down more, further reducing aerodynamic lift and improving the eye shade effect. I was very pleased with this minor modification after I tried it. Goggle keepers on the sides of the helmet hold the eye wear strap in place during even extreme maneuvering. Chin strap retention is accomplished with double D-rings. A plastic snap keeps the extra strap length from flapping in the wind. If you don’t want to fumble with D-rings, an Echo Quick Release buckle, available from many power sports dealers, can be added for less than ten dollars. An optional hook-and-loop (Velcro) attached breath box (breath deflector) TrailPass is offering NYTRO member discounts on TrailPasses. The cost this year to members is $60.00 per person, per pass. There is a “Buy it now” button on the website at: www.nytroatv.org. If you are purchasing a pass may be added to the helmet for wintertime use. It’s also under ten dollars. The Bottom Line The Z1R Rail Apex helmet is an outstanding buy, offering Snell-rated moto-cross style protection and the comfort of a more expensive product at a suggested retail price of only $129.95. Available in bright red, bright orange, sunshine yellow, lime green, royal blue, sexy pink, “alloy” gray, and rubatone (rubberized paint) black, the adult Rail Apex comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL from any Parts Unlimited dealer.
