NYTRO NEWS Page 3 CHAPTER NEWS NYTRO Northern Chapter • Some of our members spent a damp day in Community Park clearing another section of trails. Thanks to those who came out and braved the elements to get about another mile of trails in our home base. We are still looking to get about another 1/2 mile cleared and then we will have a trail that borders all around the outside perimeter of the park. • Some of our members again braved the elements to conduct our first chicken barbeque of the season. The many hands of help were greatly appreciated and a big special thank-you goes out to member Larry Rudd for once again cooking his delicious chicken. We couldn’t of done it without him! • Fourteen of our members got together one night to clean up the section of highway that we are responsible for. It only took about an hour to clean the sides of Route 11. Afterwards we enjoyed a cookout at the home of Ralph and Patty Miller. • Our Brasher Falls weekend getaway on July 22nd through the 24th is now an official GO. Word has it the DEC has now opened the trails back up, as they had them closed due to the wet weather. Members should be calling the folks at the Riverside Campgrounds now to make their reservations. You can reach them at 389-4771. • Our membership renewal drive has now been under way and you should be getting your renewal into us as soon as possible. The deadline is soon approaching and if you haven’t gotten it back to us yet, you really need to or risk losing your membership in this fine organization. If you have any question, then please call our membership coordinator at 387-6396 after 5:00 pm or contact him via email at fabulous1@citlink.net. • We are finding it extremely hard to be able to accomplish all that needs to be done with only a hand full of members helping out. We always get the same folks and its time for some new blood to jump in and lend a helping hand. Some of us are looking to step down from our positions and are hoping that others will step in and take this club into the future. Think about it and I hope some will step up to the challenge. Upcoming Events / Rides: July 22nd – 24th, 2005: Brasher Falls Weekend Getaway. Everyone should call the folks at the Riverside Campgrounds for your reservations at this time, by calling (315) 389-4771. August 6th, 2004: Pulaski Fireman’s Field Days Parade. We will be gathering at the business of Dave Hall’s lumberyard and sawmill at 5:15 PM SHARP. Polish all your chrome and be part of one of the biggest parades in the area. Safety is our main goal, so remember those beanie protectors. Directions to our gathering place are as follows: Directions for coming from the North: Take Route 11 south to Pulaski. Just as you get into the village limits, the Sawmill will be on your right. It is across the road from the Niagara Mohawk Station. Directions for coming from the South: Take Route 11 north to Pulaski. Go all the way through the village and as you start to come out of the village limits, the Sawmill will be on your left. If you go pass a cemetery on your right, you have gone to far. NYTRO Southern Chapter ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS: The Chemung property is CLOSED until further notice due to the extremely WET conditions. Sorry for any inconvenience. we'll send out an update as soon as we can. Thanks in advance for your patience. NYTRO NEWS Page 5 CHAPTER NEWS NYTRO Western Chapter As most of you know our past leaders all stepped down from there posts and we were with out leadership. Mark Fiorella took the time to contact Joanne Wemes and a re-organizational meeting was held on June 2. The turn out was a little low, but those in attendance held the meeting. We elected new officers and are as followed: Exec. Director: Dale and Julie Mackey 716-549-6118 Asst. Director: Branden Baldwin 716-652-7827 Treasurer: Mark Fiorella 716-992-9302 Secretary Paula Fiorella We have another meeting on July 14 at Mark’s house for now. Please call 716-549-6118 or 716-992-9302 for directions and information. We are working to get the new memberships out please understand it will take a little time. If you have not renewed please do, we are still using the same P.O. Box for now. If anyone has questions or ideas to help the club etc, you can email me at: rb757@aol.com subject NYTRO. We are going to try and set up some rides and meeting ride work parties. I will be talking to Mike Allenbrand at Long Meadows Park. TrailPass would like us to check out the Cuba property for trail marking and to see if the map is close to being right. We can use the land but stay on trails and be responsible. Please remember it's our club and we need to take these responsibilities to make sure the trails are kept up and safe to ride. TrailPass covers the clubs insurance for using the trails, you also can get NYTRO land use permits free, if you attend work parties. This also ties into TrailPass permits. This is the first step to bring things back together and have fun in the process. I look forward to meeting everyone at some point or another. If the day or time is bad that we have for the meeting, drop me note, maybe it should be on different day and time. We will take majority ruling on it. Thank you, Dale and Julie Mackey, Executive Directors 716-549-6118 Email: rb757@aol.com June 11 & 12 Dice Run at Copper Ridge by Brandon Baldwin , Western Chapter The Dice run at Copper Ridge was the best dice run I have ever been on! The trails were well groomed, the staff pleasant, the food good, and parking dry. Those who have gone to runs where 4 wheel drive was needed simply to get to unload an ATV will understand why this is important. The vegetation was well trimmed back, therefore bare arms don’t become scratched and visibility is enhanced. The condition of the ground was rutty with roots or ditches made by spinning tires. Therefore, this would be ideal for dirt bikes as well. And, although it was a rainy weekend due to thunderstorms, the ground wasn’t a mess. The trails were groomed in such a way that they were more difficult than state run trails such as Allegany but less difficult than trails such as Salamanca. On top of that, there were bypasses for more difficult sections and shortcuts back to your vehicle in case you needed it. Orange arrows make the trail very easy to follow. Green arrows mark the easiest trails for an easy ride or for kids getting into riding. In other words, you will find it easy enough that you are unlikely to get hurt or be worn out for the rest of the day but difficult enough to have fun. Isn’t that the point? A meal is included with your admission, which is homemade and served with a smile. Camping is available for campers who want to “rough it” or those who want water and electricity for those who want to “rough it easy.” Kids will like the family, “laid back” environment provided by Devin Barron, Greg Thropp and John Lock- wood, Event organizers for Copper Ridge OHV Club. Private events and riding are available by appointment by calling 716-372-4021 or 3971584. For more information without opinion, see their website at copperridgetrails.com. The next dice run is the weekend of July 2 & 3. I will see you there with my NYTRO shirt on. I also plan on organizing a NYTRO ride there. NYTRO NEWS Page 6 NYTRO NEWS Page 7 NOHVCC PLAYS INTEGRAL ROLE IN DEVELOPMENT OF "SOUND ADVICE" DOCUMENT Motorcycle Sound Working Group details recommendations for the entire motorcycle and ATV community on how to eliminate the number one obstacle to motorized land-access The National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) played an integral role in the development of “Sound Advice”, a 76-page report that was recently released by the Motorcycle Sound Working Group. The document is the culmination of a two-year effort by the group after the first summit conference convened in May of 2003. It contains numerous and detailed recommendations to address excessively loud exhaust sound from both off-highway vehicles (dirt bikes and ATVs) and street motorcycles. The stakeholders included representatives from off-highway vehicle organizations, street rider organizations, motorcycle industry, competition sanctioning bodies, law enforcement, research institutions, regulatory agencies and government officials The document was finalized at the second National Summit on Motorcycle Sound that was held on Saturday, May 14 in Columbus, Ohio and was hosted and facilitated by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT “This was a great achievement that the entire motorcycle and ATV community got together to recognize that excessive sound is a major issue that we all face,” says NOHVCC Executive Director Russ Ehnes who has been involved in the project from the very beginning. “This document is incredibly important because it makes a number of recommendations that all of us can do to reduce and eventually eliminate the problem.” Some of those recommendations include encouraging aftermarket exhaust manufacturers to build quieter pipes, educating the riding public and informing the enthusiast media, a national sound limit for off-highway riding on public lands, sound limit enforcement at motorcycle and ATV competitions, and encouraging the manufacture and use of quieter street bikes and exhausts. THE REAL WORK BEGINS Don Amador, western representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition and member of the sound working group, said, "I think AMA deserves a lot of credit for acting as the facilitator to help bring a diverse group of motorcycle interests together to address the number one land-use conflict – excessively loud motorcycles." "We're grateful to all those who contributed to these recommendations, helping American motorcyclists address a difficult and import ant issue," said Robert Rasor, AMA President. "Now, for the motorcycling community and the powersports industry, the real work begins, and the AMA will continue to participate in creating solutions." NYTRO NEWS Page 8 PINE HILL ATV PARK On May 14th, The Central Chapter members got up bright and early, grabbed their ATV’s and trail cleaning tools and head out for what would be a fun filled day at Pine Hill ATV Park! We had 18 members attend and everyone worked up a sweat and appetite! After all the work was done members took a break and enjoyed Hot’s and Hamburgers with all the fixing’s! NYTRO Central Chapter provided the meat and everyone brought a dish to pass. Thanks to everyone that bought a dish. We had our 50/50 raffle and t-shirt/hat give away. The mud pit toward the end had a sign that said "Enter at your own risk" with a detour around it. They have two more this summer on in June and the other in August. It also marks another important milestone, the two millionth ATV coming off the line. Since 1985, Polaris has set the standard for ATV performance and innovation, selling sport and recreational utility machines to enthusiasts, farmers, ranchers, hunters, multi-acre homeowners and even the military. The first ATVs Polaris built were the Scrambler three-wheeler and the Trail Boss four-wheeler. The company built approximately 1,700 Scramblers before retiring the three-wheel model in 1986 when the industry shifted to four-wheel machines. The Trail Boss is still a model that exists today. In 1995, the company launched what would become, and still is, the best selling ATV of all time, the Sportsman. Polaris sold more than 715,000 Sportsman units through 2004. "Over the last twenty years, we've strived to listen to the customer and design innovative machines that allow riders to have fun and get the job done more easily, more efficiently and more comfortably," said Bennett Morgan, vice president and general manager of the ATV division at Polaris. "We're not going to change that focus in the next twenty years, rather we'll build on our momentum and continue to introduce new and exciting products for riders." In 1985, the Polaris ATV manufacturing line in Roseau, MN consisted of approximately 200 people. At that time, annual ATV production was completed over the course of around 24 days. Today, Polaris ATVs are manufactured by more than 1,500 employees in the company's three facilities - Roseau, MN; Spirit Lake, IA and Osceola, WI. And currently, ATV production is underway approximately 220 days each year. The final assembly is done in Spirit Lake and Roseau, the birthplace of Polaris. Innovations - Polaris Firsts Polaris has been a pioneer in many aspects of the ATV industry as the first company to manufacture an ATV in the US. The company came to market first with many key features that are now standard across the industry -- automatic transmission, on demand all-wheel drive, independent rear suspension (IRS), 4WD sport model, single lever braking, engine braking system (EBS), electronic fuel injected 4x4 and electronically locking rear differential. 2005 Polaris ATV Line Up 2005 marks an important year for Polaris ATVs. Sixty-two percent of the company's ATV line is completely new -- including the largest and most powerful ATV in the industry - the Sportsman 800 Twin EFI, the Phoenix - a full-size entry level sport ATV at a great value, and the Sportsman MV7 - the toughest ATV ever built, based on a special vehicle Polaris produced for the military. Awards - Industry Recognition Polaris has been recognized by the industry for excellence in products and performance. Some of the notable awards Polaris has achieved include: Field & Stream - "Best of the Best Award" -2005 Sportsman 800 Twin EFI ATV Guide - "Sport ATV of the Year" - 2005 Predator Troy Lee Edition & 2003 Predator 500 ATV Sport - "Sport ATV of the Year" - 2003 Predator ATV Rider - "Sport ATV of the Year" - 2003 Predator All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine - "Best in Class" -2004 ATP VersaTrac (Innovation), Sportsman 600 & Predator 500 ATV Magazine - "ATV of the Year" - 2004 ATP and 2002 Sportsman 700 Twin; 2001 First ever "Legacy Award" -Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) on the 1985 Trail Boss ATV 4-Wheel Action - "Top 20 ATVs of All Time" - Sportsman 500 & Scrambler 500 Military Presence In early 2004 Polaris signed its first military contract for $10.3 million over five years and began developing an ATV specifically to meet the needs of troops overseas. The military version, MV, evolved and is now being used in Afghanistan and Iraq. The machine boasts the chassis and engine of a standard Sportsman 700 but also incorporates a number of unique features, making it ideal for military use in all types of terrain. The agreement also includes Polaris Sportsman 6x6 models modified to meet military specifications. About Polaris With annual 2004 sales of $1.8 billion, Polaris designs, engineers, manufactures and markets snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), Victory motorcycles and the Polaris RANGER for recreational and utility use. Polaris is the recognized leader in the snowmobile industry; and one of the largest manufacturers of ATVs in the world. Victory motorcycles, established in 1998 and representing the first all-new American-made motorcycle from a major company in nearly 60 years, are rapidly making impressive in-roads into the motorcycle cruiser marketplace.
