Working in between storms trying to clear trails you can view the damage that was done. Unknown if it was ever officially called a tornado or just very strong wind shears. Since May have cut over 200 trees that were uprooted or snapped off, blocking the trails and roads in the area. Last month scheduled ride and meeting along with the Picnic was canceled due to safety reasons. High winds are bringing down some of the thousands of widow makers still perched up in the trees. It would be nice if we had an aerial ladder to safely remove them. With the amount of damaged trees, many landowners cannot afford to have good trees cut just to remove what’s hanging up in it. Our local enclosed pavilion fell victim to a huge pine that demolished a corner of the building. Even worse, opening it up to disparate thieves who stole the gas grill. Memberships are coming in slowly and many members have given up because of the lack of support or snail pace of getting trails opened by the County Politicians. With the price of fuel and all that, it has affected many and they have found themselves making life style changes in what they must do to survive. At the projected $7.00 a gallon for gas in two years, I to will have no choice and curtail many a trip. Price of heating fuel has already started rising & it’s a shame that the majority of the downed trees are soft wood that is undesirable for firewood. Plotting out a nearby County land, once the final “Jefferson County Recreational Master Plan” is approved within a couple of months, I will be able to add hours of trail riding and also bypass some curbside homes that the irresponsible riders have been rattling. So there is a future, but it is bleak at this point. Many people say I care too much, but someone has to. Our future depends on the commitment of those out there hanging on. Just wish those that have been getting the free ride would step up or get out of the program if they don’t want to be responsible riders. On behalf of outraged OHV enthusiasts, the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) contacted the Ad Council last week strongly urging them to withdraw the inaccurate and inflammatory ATV-oriented public service advertisements. BRC reviewed the ad material posted at Volume 16, Is sue 6 Page 10 Brand new 2007 Sunl 110 four stroke pit bike, only 2 tanks of gas used, located in West Sand Lake, NY. The ad implied that the proper way for motorized recreationists to prevent wildfires is for them to load up their vehicles and go home. Smokey Bear has historically cautioned the public against careless acts, such as tossing a lighted cigarette out of a moving automobile or not properly extinguishing a campfire. BRC feels this ad should be focused on educating the public about using approved spark arrestors on their OHVs and confining their use to legal roads, trails, and areas. Don Amador, BRC spokesperson on the use of sound compliant mufflers and spark arrestors, states, "As an advocate for the use of legal exhaust systems on public and private lands, I found the current Smokey Bear ATV wildfire PSA to be offensive, unethical, and unprofessional. The ad should have been focused on encouraging enthusiasts to use legal spark arrestors on their OHVs and stay on designated routes." "Smokey Bear is inappropriately using a mountain biker as a surrogate to tell members of the motorized trail community that the best way for them to prevent wildfires is to just stay home. This ad sends the wrong message at a time when many government and civic leaders are encouraging young people to step away from their video games and get out and enjoy the great outdoors," Amador continues. "BRC has heard from a number of our recreation partners and agency staff who are equally outraged by this PSA. It is our hope the Ad Council, Forest Service, and National Association of State Foresters withdraw this ad and work with BRC and other stakeholders to develop a legitimate outreach program to the OHV community," Amador concludes.
