Next Club Meeting: • Sunday, August 9th-ride, meeting and picnic at Demon Run ********** NYTRO Southern Tier Meeting Minutes for August 9, 2009 30 members attended!!! Night Ride It was a blast! A fabulous Chicken BBQ dinner served was by Walt, Jean and Vicky at Lake Demmon Recreation. Then we broke up into two groups and set out to ride. Just some light rain fell for the first hour and a half or so...then the skies opened up! And on top of that, someone in the first group ran over a skunk—phew what a smell! We hope to get another night ride planned before the end of the riding season— stay tuned! Town of Howard Parade We had 14 riders participate in the parade. Dave and Vicky put together a neat “float.” They mounted their new Demon Run ATV Trails sign on the back of the hay wagon, then strapped an ATV to it and had Vicky and her grandson seated on it! They led the way for us and it was great publicity for us and the trails. Lots of nice comments! Insurance Update We have switched insurance companies to National Motorsports/ Rider Network as our previous agency came in at almost double the price! We now have better coverage and added medical coverage. We are only charged by membership, not trail miles and landowners. And one event’s coverage is included for each chapter. Reciprocal Riding Agreement in the Works We are talking with the All County ATV Club about setting up a reciprocal riding agreement between our clubs, with a $5 co-pay to cover insurance costs. They have organized rides every- other weekend. The next one is scheduled for August 16th. Please let Pam know if you are interested so that she can make arrangements for you to attend. Their trails are mostly 4-wheel drive, so be prepared! Luckily even with the continued heavy rainfall, the last several high wind storms have spared us some major trail damage. After several meetings with the Jefferson County “Sign Department Supervisor” I was able to provide enough information to provide what was needed to finally get the “Official County “ATV Road Signs” up. If they had a choice they would have preferred to use our smaller temporary signs up which in many spots they did. We had a lot of positive complements about our dedication and signing abilities. Working with the Towns over the last three years has helped us out. Our signage in Southern Jefferson County has had some good effects to compensate for the lack of proper maps. Complaints continue to come in from disgruntled ATV riders who have been caught on the roads in Lewis County which showed open on the map but was actually closed. Our County Coordinator ‘request’ for the use of, in Jefferson County of the “YAMAHA GRANT HEAVY Equipment” was turned down from Lewis County, per Scott Burto. So I guess the Yamaha funding for regional equipment continues to be misrepresented. Maybe by next year something will turn around for Jefferson County and we can find funding for our own equipment. We won’t turn our backs on neighbors and will share in the area to develop a regional MULTI USE Trail system that out shines any roads in the region. Property is out there, but funding and equipment continues to be the development factor. The discussion of having an All NYTRO Chapter Excursion to the Sproul State Forest Trail System on Memorial Day has received some major interest and would like to start planning for next year. We are looking at having 2 to 3 major fundraisers for 2010 and have some ideas kicking around but need to find someone to head them up. I can’t keep doing everything and need to start grooming my replacements so that some day I can slow down. All the work has taken its toll on more of my equipment. After some heavy pulling several weeks ago dragging the 12 foot logs ½ mile I tore out the bearings in my wheeler. If all the people who have stopped and talked follow thru with memberships we will have another dozen families to add to the membership. The word is getting out on the work we are doing and ATV supporters are slowly coming back in. Economics continue to be discussed. With the exceptions of side by sides, ATV sales have dropped drastically in the area. It is still a cheap way to get the family out for the day so it is all about selling it to the riders. In closing I can pass on something we have all seen—my new son in law who has loved the thought of getting a wheeler got a big assist from his brother as a wedding gift. As a new proud owner of a 2005 660 Yamaha Grizzly we took him out for a ride the next day following the wedding. I pointed him in the direction of the drainage ditch that we are working on opening up and turned him loose. Mud and water flying, he emerged on the other end with a smile on his face from ear to ear covered head to toe. He is hooked and plans on adding the rear seat as soon as it comes in and will spend many hours with his family enjoying what we all have grown to Love. Until we meet on the Trails Ride Safe. Dave (585) 334-0122 or dwells@rochester.rr.com The Fulmer RX2 Baron Helmet By David Wells Fulmer is one of America’s best selling helmet brands, but is generally associated with street bikes. What many powersports enthusiasts don’t realize is that the 90-year old Memphis, Tennessee-based company also offers a full line of off-road, snowmobile, and half-helmets, too. They began making motorcycle safety helmets in 1969, and production is now done in Taiwan. Introduced last year, the popular Fulmer RX2 Baron is rather unique with its Germanic-themed graphics. The clear coated Baron graphic utilizes an abstract base pattern that includes sunbursts with an iron cross on top of the shell and another on the underside of the visor, and the word “Baron” in ornate script on the back of the helmet. Integrated pin striping adds interest to the design. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but between the Kamm-back aerodynamic shape of the shell and the graphics package, I think this is one of the best looking off-road helmets that I’ve seen lately. A small ridge near the bottom of the shell combines with the goggle grabbers to keep eyewear firmly in place. Eight exhaust ports move cooling air from chin bar and forehead intakes though the crown and collar areas, with air channels molded into the expanded polystyrene inner shell to help cool the wearer’s head. The relatively short visor has an externally- mounted adjuster knob for easier access than most. Archaic D-ring closure is provided for the chin strap, but an inexpensive Echo Quick Release is an easy and very worthwhile addition. Inside, the removable and washable liner provides very comfortable suspension and a snug fit that cradles the head without feeling tight or confining. During all-day rides over a considerable range of temperatures and weather conditions, I have found this to be one of the most comfortable of the popularly-priced helmets that I protect your head gear during have tried. And although the well- vented visor is shorter and a little wider than the visors on some other helmets I have worn, it works very well to block out sun glare and seems less prone than some others to creating tiresome head lift at higher speeds. Workmanship on the RX-2 Baron is very good, with nice crisp graphics and good fit and finish throughout. The DOT-certified RX2 also feels substantial, providing confidence in its protective abilities. Like all Fulmer helmets, it carries a two-year warranty. The RX2 is available in sizes XS to 2XL starting at $113.95. Baron graphics color choices are silver/black, red/ black, pink/black, and blue/black, plus a pricier ghost black with red trim. The RX2 is also available in RealTree hardwoods camo and the Fulmer Mortal Coil skull and bones graphic at higher price points. Fulmer’s JX2 is a very similar product for Junior riders that starts at $99.95. And black nylon Fulmer helmet bags are available to transport, too. Emphasizing the company’s commitment to safety and comfort, Fulmer helmets are sold only through authorized Fulmer dealers who properly fit purchasers in person. Internet and phone or mail order sales are not available, period. We applaud this attention to proper fitting of the most important powersports safety device. You can locate your nearest dealer on the web at www.Fulmerhelmets.com. Some of them are NYTRO sponsors who offer member discounts, too.
