NYTRO OHV NewsNew York Trail Riders Organ i zatio n , Inc. Volume 14, Issue 8 August 2006 NYS ATV/OHV Advocacy News Polaris Grants an Additional $125,000 to ATV Clubs National, State and Local ATV Clubs & Organizations to Benefit MINNEAPOLIS, August 18, 2006 – Polaris Industries is proud to announce the second round of ‘T.R.A.I.L.S.’ grant recipients, with grants totaling $125,871, for a year-to-date total of $395,138 granted to national, state and local ATV clubs. In this round, Polaris issued grants to 13 organizations in 12 states. To date, Polaris has assisted 47 ATV organizations in 27 states across the U.S. The first of its kind in the ATV industry, the ‘T.R.A.I.L.S.’ grant program was launched in January for ATV clubs, associations and grassroots groups. ATV riders and the trails they use are the lifeblood of the sport and Polaris aimed to create a program to help. The T.R.A.I.L.S. program makes funds available to national, state and local organizations in the United States to ensure the future of ATV riding. T.R.A.I.L.S. stands for: T = Trail Development R = Responsible Riding A = Access I = Initiatives L = Lobbying S = Safety The grant program encompasses two main objectives – promoting safe and responsible riding, and preserving access. Funds can be used by organizations for trail development and maintenance projects, safety and education initiatives, lobbying and other projects to increase and maintain land access. “Trail access is our number one challenge in the industry,” said Mike Dougherty, general manager of the ATV division at Polaris. “Our continuing and growing dedication to this program demonstrates our leadership in the industry and commitment to doing something about it.” The grants ranged from $2,000 to the maximum $10,000 and will be applied toward projects including: safety and education; search and rescue equipment and programs; trail mapping and marking; trail development, stabilization and reconditioning; bridge building; OHV park and forest service enhancement; lobbying efforts and formation of a new state organization (Illinois). The second round of T.R.A.I.L.S. grant recipients are as follows: Local Organizations -Apache County ATV Roughriders Club (Arizona) -Friends of the Inyo (California) -River Ranch Preservation & Conservation Association (Florida) -Roseau / Lake of the Woods Sportsman Club (Minnesota) -Thomson Township / Esko Volunteer Fire Department (Minnesota) -Deepwater Volunteer Fire Department (Missouri) -City of St. John (North Dakota) (Continued on page 9) Newsletter Article Submissions: nytroatvny@aol.com Check us out on the web at http://www.nytroatv.org Chapter Information NYTRO of Western NY 676 Madison Ave, Angola, NY 14006 (716) 549-6118 - rb757@aol.com Co-Presidents – Dale & Julie Mackey Serving Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming, Genesee, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties NYTRO of the Southern Tier 1111 Carrie Ave, Endicott NY 13760 (607) 786-0676 - director@nytrostier.org Website: www.nytrostier.org President – Gary Burns Serving Broome, Chemung, Tioga, Stueben, Tompkins, Schuyler, Seneca and parts of Onondaga and surrounding Counties NYTRO of Central NY P.O. The first workshop is September 7. The last is September 19. All applications are due back to OPRHP by *October 13, 2006*. No wheeled-OHV club is known to have ever submitted a successful application in NY, to fund ATV/OHM trail development, or equipment for the purpose. Many snowmobile groomers and hiking trails have benefited, the former which we can live with since this money comes from Federal gas taxes estimated to be used in OHVs. Still much of it goes to non-motorized rails in NY. If we do not attempt to get some of this fund that we paid into by buying gas to ride off- road, shame on us. Report your successes so we can share the good news. Our next meeting will be September 28th at the Friendly's off exit 15 in Saratoga Springs. The reason for this change it to try to correspond with the newsletter. Jim and Mike are checking into the combo lock and gate for the Ormsbee Road access. Jim has about 20 miles of trail cleaned. Thanks Jim and everyone that has helped clean the trails Dues increased has been voted on and approved my the membership, the new rates are as follows $100.00 for single and $125.00 for a family. DUES ARE DUE SEPTEMBER 1ST... Prorated Dues Rates: September -May $100.00 single and $125.00 family June-August $150.00 single and $175.00 family Events • ATV Rodeo September 9 at Glad Rags Sand Drags in Corinth NY. Gates open at 8:00 am, Registration at 9:00 am and the event starts at 12:00 pm. If you have any ideas for the course let one of the officers know. If you can volunteer your time please arrive by 8:30 am. Set up for this event is at 6:00 pm September 8th at the Glad Rags. Meeting date Starting in September the meeting date will change to the last Thursday of the month. We are changing the date to try to coincide with the newsletter. Trails If you can help Jim out with the trails give him a call. This year’s Event s were way down on riders. The July event was canceled after only 6 people showed up to pull and did not want to run after no one else showed up. The August event at the fair was the best for this year with 63 rider showing up to pull and the annual ATV rodeo was way off with only 15 rider showing up. So I would like to ask members for their option on things that we can do to try and improve these number next year. Remember the club use to be able to pay the lease off from these events so lets try to get it that way again and of coarse if you know someone that was at one of are events this year talk to them and see if they would like to see any chance or have any thing that they would like to see added. With the access road to the club land now being black top and with increased traffic I'm going to submit a letter to the town of Greenfield again and try to get the road post for ATV travel so the traffic on the road will know where there. I'm also going to ask the local DEC officer to help with getting this done he has said in the past that we would assist us in any way that he can on this matter. I would also like to have all members bring ideal to the October’s meeting for new way to promote the club and to try and increase membership. ALL MEMBERS there is to be NO CUTTING what so ever on the club land with out talking to the Trail Coordinator: Jim Glockner or one of the other officers. There has been some changes to our lease contract on this matter and if any one breaks this rule it can cost the club a $250.00 dollar fine per cut per this year’s lease contract. Starting now we need to contact Finch- Pruyn Forester Department before we can do any thing (cutting, reopening of trails clearing area’s Ect. ) If any of these rules are broke we can be fined and even lose our lease. So if you see something that you feel needs attention, flag it or mark it someway and let an officer know about it right away THANK YOU. Jim Glockner has meet with the Forester for Finch-Pruyn and has been showed where the entrance of the new club land is from Ormsbee Road and we will now be looking into seeing what can be done for a parking area over there. There was a gate at one time this is now gone. So we will be working with Finch-Pruyn on getting a new one put up. Please contact your chapter director. http://www.trailpass.com Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 9 The Subtly Sophisticated Scorpion VX Series By David Wells Scorpion Sports is a relatively new player in the power sports helmet market. Formed by experienced veterans of the riding apparel business, this young company is producing some innovative head gear. Their off-road helmet line, the VX series, is a case in point. The various models are all essentially the same helmet except that the VX-17 is made of fiberglass while the less- expensive VX-14 and the youth-sized VX-9 are made of a polycarbonate and ABS blend. Each model is available two graphics treatments and a variety of colors. We evaluated the Snell M2000 and DOT-certified VX-14 Lightning. Although it initially appears to be just another nice popularly-priced off-road helmet, careful examination reveals some sophisticated engineering that other competitively-priced helmets just don’t have. Built To Function Better The first thing that seems a little different about the VX-14 is the slightly unusual shell shape. There’s a small ridge around the back of the head. It might seem like just a styling exercise, but it does function to keep your goggle strap from sliding down off the back of the helmet, and also keeps the strap up where it won’t block the lower rear vents, either. Of course, there are the usual goggle grippers on the sides of the facial opening, too, so this helmet is going to keep your eyewear where it belongs. Inside is one of the best features. Like many modern helmets, the VX-14 has a removable and washable headliner. But this interior comes out and goes back in a lot quicker than anything we’ve seen in other helmets because the entire headliner, not just the cheek pads, uses snaps to locate and hold the padding. No more laborious tucking and sliding pieces down between the foam and the shell. This is definitely a quick-change interior. And Scorpion offers a variety of optional interior designs, too, so you can choose something wild like a jungle print if you are so inclined. They also thought about using this helmet for cold weather riding, too. The optional winter headliner has a fleece forehead for that nice, cozy feeling when the mercury dips below freezing. And there is also an optional combination breath deflector and chin curtain for facial warmth in snow season. It is held in place by the cheek pad snaps, so it won’t flop around like all the others we’ve seen. Ventilation is another interesting Scorpion design feature that shows these guys were really thinking. Like virtually all contemporary MX helmets, the VX-14 has flow-through vents in the crown to help keep your head cool in hot weather. Of course, that’s not really what you want in the winter, so Scorpion also offers an optional kit of removable foam plugs to close the vent holes in the crown for winter use. Just snap out the headliner, install four plugs and the breath deflector, and put the liner back in. Takes about ninety seconds to change the VX-14 from summer to winter configuration or back again, and most of that is getting the cheek pads back in correctly. Out On The Trail (Continued on page 14) Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 10 Sponsors Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 11 Sponsors Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 12 Sponsors Volume 14, Issue 8 Page 13 The Subtly Sophisticated Scorpion VX Series (con’t) (Continued from page 10) When riding with the VX-14 late this summer, we noted that the helmet provided a secure, close fitting feeling without ever getting uncomfortable or claustrophobic. Wearer comfort is superior, the ventilation system really works, and outward vision is excellent. The relatively short but adjustable sun visor does its job just fine and has an unusually large amount of venting to reduce wind lift. The only thing we’d change is the double D-ring chin strap closure. Adding an Echo Quick Release would be a good improvement, but it won’t fit without sawing out the D-rings. We know. We tried it. What we can say is the D-rings on the VX-14 work well, particularly because they are equipped with a plastic snap to keep the excess strap length from flapping around and a pull-tab to ease opening the strap closure. Overall, this helmet definitely gets a thumbs-up. The Bottom Line Scorpion helmets are supplied with a cloth bag equipped with a drawstring to protect the finish on the shell. It’s just one more little touch that separates Scorpion from the popular priced pack. The company also offers a unique soft helmet carrying case. Equipped with a small internal storage compartment, shock cord helmet protection, dual zippers, a carrying handle, and an outer mesh storage compartment, this innovative helmet bag provides a lot more protection for your Scorpion helmet than the typical $20 or $25 helmet bag. This one, called a RaceCase™ is one heck of a bargain at just $39.95. The VX-14 motocross style helmet is very sophisticated helmet for just $129.95 in solid black or $10 more for multi-colored graphics treatments in red, yellow, orange, blue, green, and silver. Sizing runs from XS to 2XL. The fiberglass VX-17 is $179.95 in solid black or $209.95 in graphics. The breathbox for winter use is a $9.95 option. If you are even thinking about a new helmet this season or next, you should definitely check out the Scorpion line up. For more information on Scorpion helmets, see www.scorpionusa.com or call toll-free 1-888-672-6774. The Scorpion VX-14 helmet is an outstanding choice for off-roaders. The Scorpion VX series features snap- out cheek pads AND head liner, which makes removal for laundering and especially re-installation much easier than with other helmets we’ve evaluated.
