NYTROOHVNewsNewYorkTrailRidersOrganization,Inc. Volume17,Issue3April2009NYTROOHVNewsNewYorkTrailRidersOrganization,Inc. Volume17,Issue3April2009 Polaris Grants $46,500 to ATV Organizations MINNEAPOLIS, April 9, 2009 – To complete the third year of the company’s T.R.A.I.L.S. grant program, Polaris Industries announced the granting of $46,500 to five organizations in five states. In more than three years, the Polaris T.R.A.I.L.S. Grant Program has granted $746,557 in funds to local, state and National ATV Clubs. To date, Polaris has assisted 83 organizations in 42 states across the U.S. The first of its kind in the ATV industry, the ‘T.R.A.I.L.S.’ grant program was launched in January 2006 for ATV clubs, associations and grassroots groups. ATV riders and the trails they use are the lifeblood of the sport and Polaris aimed to create a program to help. The T.R.A.I.L.S. program makes funds available to not-for-profit national, state and local organizations in the United States to ensure the future of legal ATV riding. T.R.A.I.L.S. stands for: T = Trail Development R = Responsible Riding A = Access I = Initiatives L = Lobbying S = Safety The grant program encompasses two main objectives – promoting safe and responsible riding, and preserving access. Funds can be used by organizations for trail development and maintenance projects, safety and education initiatives, lobbying and other projects to increase and maintain land access. “Polaris continues to see increasing interest in our grants program,” said Matt Homan, vice president and general manager of the Off-Road Division at Polaris. “We continue to be committed to the organizations who work diligently to ensure the future of our sport.” The grants ranged from $7,000 to the maximum $10,000 and will be applied toward: trail development, improvements, expansion, education and the construction of an ATV safety course. The sixth round of T.R.A.I.L.S. grant recipients are: Local Organizations Long Island Recreational Trails Conservatory (New York) Balsam Trail Blazers ATV Club (Minnesota) Birdseye Mountain ATV Club (Vermont) State Organizations Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Association National Organizations USDA Forest Service-Ironton Ranger District (Ohio) For more information on the ‘T.R.A.I.L.S.’ grant program and an application form, visit the Polaris Web site at www.polarisindustries.com and click on “Riders,” then select “Right to Ride.” http://www.pi54.com/ATV/PDFs/ TRAILSGrantAppForm.pdf Grant applications are reviewed two times per year --in March and September, with corresponding submission deadlines of March 1 and September 1. Organizations must have 501c3, 501c7 or non-profit organization status. Project funding, or matching funding, from other sources is an important criteria to be considered for a T.R.A.I.L.S. grant. The new Lewis County Trail program has mandated whether the 10-16 year old is accompanied by a parent they still have to take the course to ride on the Trails. This past weekend was the "Great Outdoor Expo." Waite Polaris once again allowed us to have a display board at their booth and membership applications for the visitors. I provided them 250, so it would be nice see how many got handed out and what percentage will actually join. Starting a month earlier, we are not seeing many renewals coming in yet and we are currently at 24 family and one single membership. Many are new members and landowners. Clocks ticking down!! Lorraine Public Hearing Thursday night on opening Portions of Town Roads April 2nd at 7:00. A (yes) vote means we will get added to the Tri County Trail Map Final Draft, {April 5Th Deadline}. A (yes) vote means May 5th Jefferson County will move forward at their Public Hearing to open County Roads 93 and 189 into Lorraine. If everything comes together we are still set for a projected Trail Opening of May 15th. This will open the village of Lorraine & our Trail System to the rest of the 45 Miles of the Jefferson County Pilot ATV Trails. This we hope will be the first of many communities that ATVers can finally show how much of a economical benefit that a legal Trail system can bring. We have the Insurance in place that helped make this all happen. We have the landowners in place that makes it legal to open the road sections that are being asked for. Trail Work Dates April 18 & 25, May 9th. Final Trail signage, culvert and grading work, final trail and tree grooming, all safety concerns identified & addressed. We have come a long way over the last few years. Many dreams went by the wayside as we fought the unending battle of the bureaucracy, finally making it all fall into place. Many friends and fellow members have given up & were lost as years went by without legal trails to ride. We have learned from our mistakes & now are winning most of the battles. United throughout the State, we now have more political allies to take that last step with us! Our Adventure is just beginning so come join the fun and help me get the word out! Currently, NYSORVA has 22 member clubs. NYSORVA has been very active at local events promoting the clubs and NYSORVA. In February 2009, NYSORVA entered in to contract with Bob Ski to represent NYSORVA as Director. His role is to support NYSORVA and work with the Manufacturers and Dealerships to support new projects that will widen our membership base and help fund NYSORVA. Each of our Regions has representation with the exception of Region 4. Currently, NYSORVA is looking for a volunteer to support that area. NYSORVA’s goal, this year, is to expand trail mileage, enroll and help start new member clubs, and to be active with the political aspects of the sport. NYSORVA has launched their first newsletter and has started a campaign to get members to sign up and stay involved. Our website, located at http:// www.nysorva.org, has a link to a calendar page for clubs to post events and outings. The goal is to make this website a useful tool for the clubs and offer important information to the user base.
